How to Properly Fit and Wear a Safety Helmet
A safety helmet only works if it fits correctly. An improperly worn hard hat can shift during an impact, leaving critical areas of the head unprotected. Follow this guide to ensure your helmet is always providing maximum protection.
Step 1: Inspect Before Every Use
Before putting on your helmet, inspect the shell for cracks, dents, or discoloration. Check the suspension for fraying, tears, or broken components. Never use a damaged helmet.
Step 2: Adjust the Suspension
The suspension system holds the shell away from your head, creating a shock-absorbing gap. Adjust the headband so the helmet sits level on your head, approximately one inch above your eyebrows. The gap between the shell and your head should be at least 1 inch (25mm).
Step 3: Secure the Chin Strap (If Equipped)
For Type II helmets or work at heights, always use the chin strap. It should be snug but not tight — you should be able to fit two fingers between the strap and your chin.
Step 4: Wear It Correctly
- Always wear the brim forward unless the manufacturer specifically approves reverse wear
- Never wear a baseball cap or beanie underneath (unless it is a thin, approved liner)
- Do not drill holes in the shell for ventilation
- Do not paint or apply stickers over cracks or damage
Step 5: Store Properly
Store your helmet away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and chemicals. UV exposure degrades the shell over time, reducing its protective capacity.
Conclusion
Proper fit is as important as the helmet itself. At RANOVA USA, our helmets come with adjustable 4-point and 6-point suspension systems for a secure, comfortable fit on any head size.
